If you ever wanted to do an activity that is a lot of fun and helps you get fitter, stronger and gain more confidence, then Kung Fu is something for you.

Our students have benefited from a range of things such as:

  • Losing weight and getting fit
  • Greater Self confidence
  • Stress relief
  • Making new friends
  • Learning something new
  • And more importantly, having fun!
What we do
What we do

The style we practise is very broad based and encompasses a variety of things, such as striking, joint locks, traditional weapons and some amazing Shaolin Animal styles.

Because our style is quite vast, our students benefit from learning a variety of different things. Our classes are designed in a way that allows you to progress at your own pace with the additional benefit of training with some of our more experienced students who will help guide you through the class. We foster an environment that everyone learns to help each other.

We truly believe our style has something for everyone.

We understand that every child is a special individual and we have established a positive learning environment where children are allowed to progress at their own pace.

We ensure our classes are disciplined but fun and our students learn and understand that through hard work and commitment they will succeed.

Some of the main benefits our children gain are:

  • Better Self Confidence and Discipline
  • Improved Behaviour at home and school
  • Proper manners and respect for parents and teachers
  • Making new friends

What our students think of the Nam Pai Chuan system and our Chiswick Club

About Us

Nam Pai Chuan Chiswick Club: Information

About the Club

The club in Chiswick was originally opened in 1997 by one of the senior black belts of the system. Jerome De Silva took over a few years after that with the focus and intention of teaching students to the best of his capability, putting everything he had learnt into the club from all the experience he had gained over the years.
He wants to teach his students with the same dedication and passion that he was taught, and endeavours to bring them to a level of being Martial Complete, which in his mind is a balance of traditional principles, precepts, values and art, coupled with the pragmatism and the understanding of applying their skills.
Jerome DeSilva endeavours to keep challenging himself and his students, while ensuring all the time that enjoyment is had. What he loves about the class and students who train is the genuine lack of ego, where everyone helps each other and we all learn together. This in his mind has helped build a solid foundation of community and family which is something we pride ourselves on.

Beginning Training

We understand that for beginners, attending your first training session can be an intimidating experience, as one does not know quite what to expect. It is worth remembering that everybody has shared this same initial experience, and it is therefore our aim to make newcomers feel as welcome as possible. Our classes are mixed groups, with students of all ages and abilities.
The first training session is free of charge so that you can determine whether this martial art and the teaching style are what you’re looking for. When attending your first class you should wear loose comfortable trousers and a T-shirt, we train bare foot so no footwear is required. Jewellery should not be worn and those items which cannot be removed should be taped over for safety. Those with long hair should have it tied up. Also ensure you bring some water with you.
Because Nam Pai Chuan is such a broad style, no two classes are ever exactly the same. However, there is consistency in that the underlying principles on which the style is based are always being developed through the various methods taught.
Training often begins with warming up exercises aimed at improving strength, aerobic fitness and increasing flexibility. The best part of training time will then be spent focused on individual skill sets either as a whole class, split up into smaller groups, or paired with a training partner. Practice commonly includes traditional forms, prearranged sequences, hard and soft chi kung, sensitivity exercises, chin na, padwork, practical self defence, body conditioning, free sparring, groundwork, classical weapons, and much more. The syllabus is challenging but rewarding.
Our classes are ongoing throughout the year with the exception of a short break over the Christmas period. As a matter of courtesy, please contact the instructor before attending your first class.

Instructor Profile

Sifu Jerome De Silva

I started Nam Pai Chuan as a teenager after being introduced by my cousin who was training at that time. I had always been interested in martial arts from a very young age which stemmed from my father who taught me the basics of combat. When I first started NPC I did not realise at the time that my teacher Master Lai was the founder and head of the system. Going on nearly three decades later he is still my Sifu, mentor and someone to whom I owe a lot. I have been very fortunate throughout my training to have been taught by other senior students, two of whom had a profound effect on my development and understanding of the art.

During the earlier stages of my training I was involved in numerous demonstrations and competitions around the country representing my club and system. I also feel that one of the biggest highlights for me was training with Master Quek in Malaysia and the UK in traditional Shaolin Gao Can, and Master Leow in Malaysia who taught myself and a few other seniors his unique brand and insight to combat arts. In addition to training in NPC I have also studied boxing, wrestling and more recently Tai Chi, all of which have given me a much better insight and helped underpin certain elements of my training.

Working at the “sharp end” of the security industry for the past 21 years, I have had to deal with stressful, violent and dangerous situations throughout, where people’s and my own safety has been threatened. I have experienced these at all levels, from the individual to the crowd/mob/gang. I have learnt to manage these and react appropriately and proportionally. This has given unique insight and experience in the behaviour of people under different circumstances and has taught me how to deal with difficult situations with and without the use of force. It has also taught me how to protect others as well as myself.

For years I have studied with members of UK Special Forces the science and practice of human behaviour and conflict, from individual fighting to strategic operations. I have been taught to view the matter from an overall perspective of both defensive (security, intelligence, deterrence) and offensive (fighting with and without weapons, operations) methods. With this experience I now also advise on, devise and plan relevant training for Police and Military Special Operations members in various countries.
